The Courier-Post published this editorial today urging the formation Senator Gerald Cardinale’s commission to analyze and help solve rising college tuition costs in New Jersey. The state Assembly needs to vote to establish this commission.

Senate Republicans are also urging Legislative Democrats to post for vote common-sense initiatives to lower tuition burdens on New Jersey families, including one just signed by Gov. Christie.

Cardinale Urges NJ Assembly to Prevent PLA Expansion, Cost Increases

The following editorial by Senator Gerald Cardinale (R-Bergen) to urge the state Assembly to vote against a costly and destructive expansion of Project Labor Agreements was published in the Bergen Record on Sunday:

ON JAN. 14, many of my colleagues and I voted against an expansion of project labor agreements, which allow elected officials to funnel more public projects to labor unions of their choice.

Both the motivation and consequences of this bill are equally destructive to bipartisan Sandy recovery efforts. Senate Democrats called a vote on this measure because Governor Christie recently received a labor union endorsement that they felt entitled to, and that union justly opposes this bill.

I oppose this bill because it tilts the playing field in favor of 14 percent of the workforce that is unionized and against 86 percent of non-unionized workers struggling in the aftermath of the Great Recession and superstorm Sandy.

Senate Approves Cardinale’s ‘Commission on College Tuition’ to Address NJ’s 3rd-Highest Tuition

The full Senate approved Thursday Senator Gerald Cardinale’s “Commission on College Tuition,” which will address the rising costs of higher education in New Jersey.

“Wednesday, we learned rising tuition at New Jersey’s public colleges and universities average the third-highest in the nation,” said Cardinale (R-Bergen, Passaic). “Since the early 1980s, the cost of college has increased by a rate more than double the increase of median family income. The average graduate of a four-year New Jersey public or private institution leaves with $23,792 in debt.”

“What’s worse is most students and families incur these harrowing burdens without knowing what actually comprises ever-growing expenses and why certain schools’ tuitions and fees cost more than others,” Cardinale added.

Committee Passes Cardinale Measure to Permit Sharing Fire Equipment

The Senate Community and Urban Affairs Committee advanced today a bill sponsored by Senator Gerald Cardinale (R-Bergen, Passaic) to allow local units to enter into joint agreements to purchase fire equipment.

“You would think this efficiency and public safety measure would already be in place,” Cardinale said. “Towns and schools can ink shared service agreements on everything from recycling to the purchase of office supplies. It makes the most sense to allow local entities to share in the purchase of critical and highly expensive fire equipment, such as trucks which can cost around $500,000 each.”

Senators Gerald Cardinale, Kevin O’Toole, Christopher “Kip” Bateman, and Jennifer Beck, Republican members of the Senate Judiciary Committee, issued this joint statement following the committee’s rejection of Bruce Harris to the New Jersey Supreme Court:

Once again, the committee’s majority has applied unsound arguments and unreasonable standards to the confirmation process to mask partisan, ideological motives for rejecting a well-qualified nominee.

Republican Senators representing districts with large numbers of New York City commuters have sent a letter to Mayor Michael Bloomberg expressing their strong opposition to any effort to restore a .45% income tax on New Jersey commuters working in New York City.

The proposal to bring back the “commuter tax”, which was abolished in 2000, has been floated by Manhattan Borough President and 2013 Mayoral candidate Scott Stringer. Proceeds from the levy would be used to bail out the long-dysfunctional Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA).

Cardinale: “Korean Community Right to be Outraged Over Kwon Rejection”

State Senator Gerald Cardinale (R- Bergen), ranking Republican member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, issued the following statement regarding today’s press conference held by Korean community leaders in response to the rejection of Phillip Kwon’s nomination to the New Jersey Supreme Court:

The Korean community is right to be outraged not only because Democrats on the judiciary committee rejected a member of their community, but because they rejected a nominee with impeccable credentials, unimpeachable personal integrity, and a long record of service to our state and our country.

Cardinale: Hold Democrats Accountable for Politically Motivated Injustices

Senator Gerald Cardinale, R-39, refuses to allow the Democrats to get away with couching Thursday’s rejection of state Supreme Court nominee Phillip Kwon as anything but a politically charged sacrifice of a venerable public servant.

“Democrats were ordered by unions and pressured by party leaders to sling hypothetical, irrelevant mud at Mr. Kwon to try to fool people into thinking there was any legitimate reason not to approve the High Court’s first Asian justice,” said Cardinale, ranking Judiciary Committee member. “In reality, the majority party is afraid their special-interest income and agenda would be jeopardized if the High Court were to swing Republican. Their sense of entitlement to control the public’s Supreme Court is a disgrace to elected office.”

Republican Judiciary Committee Members: “Democrats’ Rejection of Kwon is Indefensible Character Assassination”

Senate Republican Judiciary Committee Members Gerald Cardinale, Kevin O’Toole, Joe Kyrillos, Christopher Bateman, and Michael J. Doherty issued the following statement regarding the Committee’s rejection of Supreme Court nominee Phil Kwon:

Today, Democratic Senators on the Judiciary Committee rejected an exceptionally well-qualified Supreme Court nominee for no good reason whatsoever. From the moment Mr. Kwon was nominated, the Majority engaged in a campaign of intensely personal character assassination centering around issues that were completely immaterial to his fitness to serve on the court.

The Majority’s entire line of questioning and basis for rejecting his nomination centered on events that had absolutely nothing to do with Phil Kwon.
